Meet the Artist: Charlo
Carlos García Walterbach, better known as Charlo, is a Denver-based multimedia artist and designer whose work explores connection, storytelling, and community through expressive linework.
Born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, Charlo earned his Bachelor of Graphic Design from UANL in 2009 before moving to the U.S. in 2013. Now an American citizen, he channels his gratitude, heritage, and experiences into every piece he creates, infusing them with emotion, curiosity, and joy.
A Practice Rooted in Connection
Charlo’s signature style transforms symbols, words, and shapes into intricate visual tapestries that weave together memory, identity, and imagination. His pieces often reveal hidden messages, small treasures of transformation and healing for those who take a closer look.
Community lies at the heart of his practice. His Make Alleys Great Again project turned more than 70 Denver garage doors into vibrant murals, reclaiming urban spaces as places of color, unity, and joy. He continued this vision with The Joy of Being Together, a live mural created with Nextdoor and the New York Stock Exchange in 2021.
Through his Inspired Students Mural Initiative, Charlo mentors youth while transforming schools across the country with collaborative murals. In the past year alone, the program has brought 15 murals to 12 schools, engaging over 6,000 students and their communities.
Global Recognition
From Denver to San Francisco, Marfa to Monterrey, Charlo’s studio and mural work have been exhibited both nationally and internationally. Whether working with paint, found objects, or installation, his art consistently returns to one central theme, the line as a vessel for connection, memory, and wonder.
